If you’re with someone who is bleeding heavily, ring 999 straight away and makes sure you do exactly what the person on the other end of the phone tells you. They might give you some or all of the following instructions:
- Go and get a clean dressing or towel.
- Press it against wherever the blood is coming from – do this until the bleeding stops.
- If you can, use a bandage to secure the dressing.
- If blood is still coming through the first bandage, keep covering it with more bandages.
Remember, the most important thing to do is call 999 as soon as you can and listen very carefully to what you are told to do while you wait for an ambulance to arrive.
