When the sun is out we all love to go to the beach, play in the park, enjoy a picnic or get the pool out in your back garden, especially when you live in England. Follow our tips to help you enjoy the lovely weather safely:
Make sure you spend time in the shade
Sometimes we don’t realise how strong the sun can be, especially in the middle of the day when it is hottest. Take regular breaks out of the sun by sitting under a parasol or inside to cool down.
Always use sun cream
Even when you think the temperature isn’t high, always wear sun cream to protect your skin and keep this topped up throughout the day.
Wear a hat
Wearing a hat can keep you cooler. A hat will protect your eyes, head and neck from the sun’s harmful rays.
Keep hydrated
When we are in the sun, our bodies lose water, especially when we are being active. Make sure you drink lots of water, or cordial if you prefer the taste, throughout the day to keep your energy up.
Sunburn treatment
If you do get sunburn, make sure you get out of the sun as soon as possible – head indoors or into the shade. You can usually treat mild sunburn at home by:
- Cooling the skin with a cold bath or shower, sponging it with cold water, or holding a cold flannel to it.
- Drinking plenty of fluids to cool down and prevent getting too thirsty.
- If you are in pain, tell your parent or guardian straight away.
